Martyrdom Day of Fifth Guru Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Ji -5th June

Martyrdom Day of Fifth Guru Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Ji -5th June

During the Guruship of Guru Arjan many thousands of the native people had began to follow the teachings of Sikhism and both the Hindus and those who had converted to or been born as Muslims were crowding into Govindwal (the centre of the Sikhs during the late 1500s) where they were soon becoming Sikhs.

It is said that after the death of Akbar in 1605, some of the Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists moved to the new head of state emperor Jahangir against Guru Sahib.

As a result, Guru Arjan Sahib was arrested and brought to Lahore where he was implicated in false cases. The Governor of Lahore tortured Guru Sahib about three days in an inhuman manner. It is said that Guru Sahib was made to sit on the hot iron plates and burning sand was poured over his naked body. He was later chained and thrown into the river Ravi. Guru Arjan Sahib finally embraced martyrdom. His martyrdom led to far reaching changes in the character of Sikhism. Read More @ http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Martyrdom_of_Guru_Arjan

Chabeel - Importance

This langar sewa ( Langar and flavored milk – Rose+water+Milk ) is organized by the volunteers every year on the occasion of Martyrdom Day of Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Fifth Guru of the Sikhs to create awareness about the martyrdom of our beloved and respected Guru.

The day is known as the hottest day of the year since the Guru Sahib was forced to sit on Red hot plate (Loh) and was tortured by putting hot sand on his forehead.

About Guru Jee and Contributions of Guru Arjan Sahib

Guru Arjan Sahib was fifth Guru of Sikhs. He was the youngest son of Guru Ramdas Sahib and Mata Bhani Ji was born at Goindwal Sahib on April 15, 1563.

Architect of Golden Temple: Arjan Dev worked beside his father, Guru Ram Das, who founded the spiritual compound, "Harmandir Sahib," or "Temple of God," and began excavation of the the manmade lake, "Amritsar," which means "immortal waters." After the death of Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan Dev carried on the task begun by his predecessors to complete construction of what is today commonly known as the Golden Temple and the moat like sarovar of sacred waters surrounding it.

Poet: Guru Arjan Dev wrote poetic scripture praising the divine, and extolling the virtues that the Sikh gurus exemplified. He penned 7,500 lines of poetic inspirational verse in all. He compiled the sacred songs and poems of earlier Sikh gurus, Hindu bhagats and Muslim pirs, and bound them together with his own inspirational compositions to create the texts of the Adi Granth. He installed the holy scripture in Harmandir Sahib. The Adi Granth makes up the major portion of Sikhism's eternal Holy Scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib.
